Yusuf Baran (Prof. Dr.)

Rector

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Baran is a professor in Molecular Biology and Genetics. Dr. Baran has been serving as the President of İzmir Institute of Technology and Chairman od the Board of Directors of the İzmir Technology Development Zone since October 28th, 18.

After completing his bachelor's degree in Biology at Dicle University from 1994 to 1998, he earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Middle East Technical University in 2002 and 2006, respectively. During his Ph.D. sturdies, he worked at the Medical University of South Carolina for six months from 2005 to 2006. He has been working at the İzmir Institute of Technology since 2007.

Dr. Yusuf Baran has been involved in more than 40 scientific research projects supported by national and international organizations. He has more than 500 published scientific articles and conference papers and has published one book. He also presented at over 400 national and international conferences, meetings and forums on science, technology and diplomacy (including in the U.S., Brazil, China, Pakistan, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Israel, Germany, Chili, the Sudan, Greece, Macedonia, Thailand, Bosnia, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, Russia, Malaysia, and South Africa). He was invited to and presented at many important conferences of global institutions including the United Nations, the European Parliament, G20 Digital and Research Ministries Meeting, the World Science Forum, the Global Baku Forum, the World Economic Forum and, the World Life Sciences Forum. 

Dr. Baran’s scientific achievements have been recognized by national and international accredited institutions, and he has received more than 100 awards.  He was honored with the "2013 Young Scientist" award by the World Economic Forum (WEF), conferred annually to 40 scientists under the age of 40 who “actively play a transformational role in integrating scientific knowledge into society for public good.” International Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs awarded him the title of “Most Outstanding Young Scientific Leader of Turkey” in 2014. He earned the “Young Member Honor” in 2015, given to 25 scientists under the age of 40 by the World Science Academy. He was selected as one of 30 people to participate in the “Science Diplomacy Workshop” in 2016 by The World Academy of Sciences. Dr. Baran also earned the “Outstanding Young Scientist Award” by the Turkish Pharmaceutical Academy in 2017, by the Experimental Hematology Association in 2016, by the Science Heroes Association in 2013, and by the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2010. Dr. Baran’s doctoral thesis won the “Year’s Thesis” award in 2007. In 2018, he was one of the 28 people chosen by the American Science Advancement Organization to participate in the “Science Diplomacy and Leadership Workshop.” He was awarded with “Sicence Leader of the Year Award” by Turkey Innovation and Outstanding Success Awards, “Science Award” by Hacettepe University and “Innovative and Enterpreneur Acamidican Award” by Aegean Economic Development Association in 2021. Most recently, he was awarded with “Entrepreneur Award” by Association of Business Women in Izmir. In 2023, he was awared with “Science Diplomacy Award” by The World Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Baran is a member of The Global Young Academy, an Executive Committee member of The World Academy of Sciences Young Affiliates Network (2016-Present), a founding member of the Developing World Academy of Engineering and Technology (2016-Present), a member of the World Association of Young Scientists (2015-Present), and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Young Scientists Program (2013-Present). He was also a member of the TÜBİTAK Advisory Board from 2010 to 2015. In addition, he has held various other appointments, including ambassador for the International Young Scientist Program and advisory board member of the Academic & Scientific Cooperation Project of Turkey.

In his research, Dr. Baran focuses on the molecular biology of cancer, science policies and science diplomacy.

Colleen Campbell

Colleen Campbell is strategic advisor for external engagement at the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL). There she coordinates two open access initiatives: the Open Access 2020 Initiative, a global alliance of research organizations and their libraries that are repurposing their investments in subscriptions to support open access publishing, and the ESAC Initiative, a library community of practice building capacities around transformative and open access publishing agreements.

She is a member of the LIBER Open Access Working Group, serves on the Managing Board of EIFL, a not-for-profit organization that works with libraries to enable access to knowledge in developing and transition economy countries in Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America, and contributes in the advisory groups of a number of other scholarly communication initiatives.

Natalia Manola

Natalia Manola holds a Physics degree from the University of Athens, and an MS in Electrical and Computing Engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and has worked for several years as a Software Engineer and Architect in the Bioinformatics commercial sector.

She has expertise in Open Science policies and implementation, having served in the EOSC Executive Board 2019-20, and in the Open Science Policy Platform (2016-17), an EC High Level Advisory Group provide advice about the development and implementation of open science policy in Europe. 

Yasar Tonta (Prof.)

Hacettepe University

Department of Information Management


Professor Yaşar Tonta is with the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey.  His research interests are information retrieval theory, information systems design, digital libraries, scholarly communication, research assessment, bibliometrics, cultural heritage, open science and open access.  

Prof. Tonta served as the founding director of the National Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM) of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and chaired the Department in the past, and was a visiting professor at Humboldt University in Berlin.  He took part in European Commission- and TÜBİTAK-supported projects.  His works appeared in several scholarly journals. He received Hacettepe University’s Science Award (2010). He is a currently member of, among others, UNESCO’s Global Open Science Steering Committee, Expert Committee of the Memory of the World of the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO, the Association of Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), Turkish Librarians’ Association (TLA), and the University and Research Librarians Association (ÜNAK). Professor Tonta received his graduate degrees from University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D.), University of Wales (M.Lib.), and Hacettepe University (M.A.).

Şebnem Özdemir (Assoc. Prof. Dr.)

Şebnem Özdemir received her bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Yıldız Technical University. She completed two master's degrees at Istanbul University, one in Mathematics Education and the other in Informatics. She received her PhD degree from Istanbul University, Department of Informatics. For his postdoctoral research, she was a researcher at the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She then moved to MIT CSAIL, where she continued her work in the field of artificial intelligence. Özdemir is currently working at Istinye University, Department of Management Information Systems.

In 2016, with the machine learning model he developed, she was awarded the "Human Development Research Award" by Koç University UNESCO Chair, and in 2020, she was awarded the "Leader Creating Awareness in Artificial Intelligence Award" by CIO Turkey. She is the founder of Usight Software and Artificial Intelligence Technologies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özdemir has worked as an executive, consultant and researcher in many national and international projects focused on data science and artificial intelligence. Assoc. Prof. Özdemir has many book chapters, articles and patents published in national and international platforms focused on data science and machine learning. Her main research interests are artificial intelligence, data science, management information systems, decision making and mathematical modeling. 

Tuba Akbayturk Canak

Tuba Akbayturk Canak has been working in academic libraries for over 24 years at different capacities. She started her career as a systems librarian following her graduation from Indiana University with an MLS. Currently, she works as the library director position at Koç University which is one of the most prominent universities in Turkey.  Within the scope of this position, she manages 5 libraries in 3 different cities in the country. Collection development, e-resources management, library automation, resource sharing and scholarly communication are some of the areas she is responsible for.

She has been actively involved with the Turkish national university libraries consortium (ANKOS) governance, including as its President between 2016-2018. She is an active advocator of open science in the region.

She serves on various national, regional and international advisory boards. She is member of the IFLA Document Delivery and Resource Sharing Standing Committee and member of the University and Research Library Association (UNAK) Sustainable Libraries Standing Committee.

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nader Ale Ebrahim is a freelance consultant specializing in "Research Visibility and Impact." He also serves as an adjunct lecturer at Alzahra University. With a focus on university rankings, open access, research visibility, research tools, and bibliometrics, Nader offers valuable assistance and guidance to researchers in effectively disseminating and promoting their work to maximize its visibility, impact, and citations.

Recognizing that the research cycle extends beyond publication, Nader emphasizes the importance of proactive efforts in disseminating research outputs. He is widely known as the creator of the renowned "Research Tools" Box and his teaching materials have garnered over 550,000 views. Due to his expertise, Nader has been invited by numerous universities and research centers to conduct webinars and workshops, further empowering researchers in their scholarly endeavors.

Sami Çuhadar (Dr.)

Sami Çuhadar completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in Information and Document Management at Istanbul University, his BA in Economics at Anadolu University, and his PhD in Information and Document Management at Çankırı Karatekin University.

Sami Cuhadar is the Library Director at Istanbul Bilgi University Library and e-Resources in Istanbul, Turkey. He is also an academic staff at Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Law and teaches “Research Methods and Accessing Legal Information Resources” to the first year Law School students.

Mr. Çuhadar is also active in non-governmental organizations in the field of librarianship and information management. He is the former president and board member of the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS) and coordinator of UNAK-Turkish Platform of Law Librarians. He has written and made studies on fields of total quality management, ranking of university libraries, online learning and university libraries. His current research focuses on legal information, information literacy, online education, university libraries, consortiums, and ERM.

Ertuğrul Çimen

Ertuğrul Çimen has a BS from Hacettepe University Faculty of Literature, Librarianship Department and a MA from Kadir Has University, Social Sciences Institute, Finance, and Banking Program. His current position is the library director of MEF University. His professional interests are academic library management, library consortiums, license agreements for e-resources, library collaboration, resource sharing, document delivery, lifelong learning, and staff exchange programs for librarians.

He has an active role in NGOs and professional organizations at the national and international levels. He is the former president of the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS) and a former executive board member of the Turkish Librarians Association (TLA). He is also the former Information Coordinator and the Secretary of the IFLA Document Delivery and Resource Sharing Standing Committee. He has been serving as the Information coordinator of the Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE) Advisory Board, a member of the Europe Regional Division Committee of IFLA, and Research Library Association (UNAK) Sustainable Libraries Standing Committee Coordinator. He is the editorial board member of the Interlending and Document Supply Journal (Emerald Publishing) and the International Journal of Knowledge Management and Practices (IJKMP).

Tolga Ayav (Assoc. Prof.)

Department of Computer Engineering

 

Tolga Ayav is with the Department of Computer Engineering at the Izmir Institute of Technology. He received his B.S. degree in Electrical-Electronics Engineering at Dokuz Eylül University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering at IZTECH and Ege University respectively. After a three-year industry experience, he joined the IT department at IZTECH in 1999. In 2000, he became an instructor in the Department of Computer Engineering. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher at INRIA Rhône-Alpes between 2004 and 2006. Since 2006, he has been working as a faculty member at IZTECH. He also acted as the vice chair of the Graduate Institute and chair of the Department of Computer Engineering. Dr. Ayav is also a co-founder of Research Ecosystems located at the technology development zone. His current research interests include software reliability, machine learning, and its blockchain applications.

Anna Walek (Dr.)

IATUL President

 

Anna Walek: An experienced library manager specializing in change management; expert in the field of Open Science, digital libraries, as well as organization and management of a scientific library. She conducts scientific research in the field of Open Access, Open Science, data management in various scientific disciplines, metadata for research data, and data management support services - incl. defining the role and tasks of data stewards and data librarians.

Member of the IATUL Board of Directors (since 2018) and, since January 2022, President of IATUL. Also, a member of several international organizations, working groups and bodies actively working for Open Science, incl.: SPARC Europe Board of Directors, CESAER (Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research), Research Data Alliance, GO FAIR (Data Stewardship Competence Centers Implementation Network national chapter coordinator), EOSC Association.

Plenipotentiary of the Rector of the GdańskTech for Open Science. Initiator and creator of the Open Science Competence Center at the Gdańsk University of Technology and the Polish National Data Stewards Network. Coordinator ad project manager of several projects and initiatives.

In the years 2007-2016, she worked at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, wherein 2013, as the Rector's Proxy for the Organization of the Center for Scientific and Technical Information (CWINT), she developed the concept of organization and functioning of a new university unit, combining the functions of a university library, departments responsible for university cooperation with the economy, technology transfer, and intellectual property management. From January 2014, she was the first director of CWINT and the director of the WrUT Libraries.

Author and co-author of scientific articles, conference publications, presentations and posters related to Open Science and research support and library management. Organizer and member of program committees of national and international conferences and meetings popularizing issues related to openness and FAIR-ness in science. 



Jenny Basford

The Repository Services Lead

British Library

 

Jenny Basford is the Repository Services Lead for the British Library, where she co-ordinates the BL’s Shared Repository Service for UK cultural heritage organisations, and EThOS, a repository of all UK doctoral theses ever produced. Prior to joining the BL in 2018 to help set up the Shared Repository Service, she managed several UK university publications and data repositories, including UCL (University College London), Middlesex University, University of Westminster, and St George’s Medical School. In addition to her interests in open scholarship, Jenny has a Ph.D. in History from the University of York, UK.

  

Paul Walk

Director

Paul Walk's career in higher education began in the early 1990s at the University of North London where he began developing with library and Web technologies. He developed a range of institutional systems, building bespoke web applications as well as partnering with major commercial suppliers to develop their products in a higher education context. Paul went on to manage enterprise-wide software development projects and developed an abiding interest in the practice and management of software development.

A change in direction in 2006 saw Paul join UKOLN at the University of Bath where, for seven years, he served the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and then its successor, Jisc, as a strategic technical advisor, with a focus in the areas of information standards development, resource discovery and digital infrastructure.

In 2013, Paul joined EDINA, University of Edinburgh, as Head of Technology Strategy and Planning, an exciting new role which placed him back into a service development and delivery environment - albeit one operating at a national as well as an institutional scale.

In 2017 Paul left EDINA to form a company, Antleaf Ltd., which provides consulting services in the areas of metadata and data management, distributed scholarly communications and repository development.

Through Antleaf, Paul provides technical consultancy and support to COAR. 

Ezgi Ergin

Librarian

Ezgi Ergin has a bachelor's degree from Ankara University, Department of Information and Records Management, and a master's degree from Ege University, Management Science and Organization.

Throughout her professional librarian life, she worked in various departments of libraries and gave in-service training. She took part in digitization projects and library installation projects. Ergin, who lectures at the Department of Information and Document Management at the undergraduate level, still works at the Izmir National Library.

She is interested in organizational resilience, organizational behavior, information retrieval, organization of information, library collaboration, and cultural heritage.

Gültekin Gürdal

Library Director

Gultekin Gurdal has been working as the library director at IZTECH for 17 years. He has a Bachelor's Degree from Haceattepe University, Library Science, and a Master’s Degree from Kocaeli University, Business Administration. He has previously held positions at Bilkent University, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, Sabanci University, and TOBB University.

He has proven working experience in the field of open access, open science, and open data for more than 10 years. Between the years 2008 and 2012, he served as the Chairman of the Turkish University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS) which is one of the biggest consortiums in Europe and the Middle East. He was also coordinator of the ANKOS Open Access and Institutional Repositories Working Group between the years 2008 and 2018. He is a member of the "Open Science Committee" which was founded by The Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council in 2015, and a member of Open Access and Open Science Working Group which was founded by The Turkish Higher Education Council (CoHE) in 2018. In addition, he is the coordinator “Turkey Research Data and Open Data Task Force" sub-working group.

He participated in OpenAIREPlus, OpenAIRE2020, and OpenAIRE Advance EU projects.   He has been working as an OpenAIRE Turkey NOAD since 2011 by actively engaging with the rest of the project team. He also served as an OpenAIRE AMKE Executive Board member since 2021 and co-founder of Research Ecosystems, an R&D Company established within IZTECH Technopark in 2021.

He works heavily in the areas of open access and open science. He accomplished many firsts in this field and he became a very well-known name in open access. He has many national and international publications.
